Ripe for Revolution

It is amazing that Mubarak lasted this long!
by Charlie Leck

What was this Egypt like – this Egypt under Hosni Mubarak as its dictator President? Well, I’ll tell you this: It was a land ripe for uprisings and revolution. Under Mubarak the national elections were severely rigged (he normally won by more than 80 percent of the votes cast). The press was heavily censored. A special and tough security police enforced Mubarak decrees. Torture chambers were more than fantasies and gossip – they were real. The Internet was intensely controlled.

Shed no tears for Mubarak. The amazing thing about these uprisings and mass demonstrations is that they didn’t happen much sooner.

Governments run by dictators around the world are taking notice and paying keen attention to Egypt, Tunisia and Jordan. Do you expect Yemen is paying attention? And, what about Iran?

Reports are that China cleansed its Internet from any information about what is happening in Egypt. I wonder why.
