Facebook Ad Says She Wants Me

I was trying to do Facebook this morning (I never fully get it, you know…) and I noticed a little picture of a very healthy looking young woman, with a generous chest, in the right hand column; and some text said she and others like her were looking to meet men aged 60+
by Charlie Leck

This Facebook thing is crazy. I want to give up on it again, but every time I do it I find some lovely little notice from someone out of my past that absolutely intrigues me. This morning I posted a photograph about our little lake voyage last Saturday evening and I got so many nice comments about it. I’m very, very slowly learning how to do Facebook and get some fun out of it.

But, what’s this about some smashing young woman who is anxious to meet me. Really! I need to tell my wife that I’m still desired – longed for – wished for – that she ought to be impressed!

I didn’t take the bait, by the way! No, you can’t fool an old codger like I. I knew there’d be some kind of fee involved. And also – well, frankly – that photo was just a little bit too much for me. I’d have a heart attack or stroke for sure. I just know I would.

What the hell is Facebook doing accepting ads like that? I saw another – a day or so ago – about penis enlargement! OMG! Is there no escaping stupidity?

Why haven’t women protested such advertising – and men too, for that matter? Well, this is my formal protest: “Facebook, those ads are stupid and they are insulting to all of us who are just trying to keep in touch with friends.”

I’m no goody-two-shoes, but must we have such unremarkable and low-brow stuff bothering us when we’re trying to share with friends on Facebook? There are plenty of places on-line for such advertising. Why so on Facebook? Just for the record, I don’t like it!

Here I Go Again!

Facebook, I’m coming back if you’ll have me; and I apologize for all the times I’ve said how glad I’ve been to be parted from you. You’ve made it so difficult! It seems so many people communicate now only by means of Facebook. I’m too old for Facebook and I’m too technologically illiterate, but, nevertheless, here I am again.
by Charlie Leck

I am planning to eat some crow; and, while chomping it down, I am going to make my return to Facebook.

“Warum?” As my German friends might ask. Ou, “Pourquoi?” As all my dear cousins and second cousins in France would ask.

Well, though I seem to be just fine doing without it, I keep getting these emails telling me that this person has befriended me (my profile and all my information must still be active) and this other friend, for whom I have really warm affection, has posted a knockout-bangdiddeldeedoo photograph that I just must see.

So, in all humility, I will see what I can do about going back to Facebook and, with minimal activity on my own, I’ll see what’s going on – if, of course, Facebook will have me.

No, I don't know where I'm going
But, I sure know where I've been
Hanging on the promises
In songs of yesterday
An' I've made up my mind,
I ain't wasting no more time
Here I go again
Here I go again

An' here I go again on my own again
Turnin’ back to Face the facts again!

A Zucker Born Every Minute

If I want to share a photographic of my grandkids, I’ll just send it along to
you in an email! This is a wonderful picture of my Chicago granddaughters.

I swore off Facebook a couple of years ago – I took the pledge – and with the help of some good friends I’ve managed to stay off it.
by Charlie Leck

Mark Zuckerberg’s net worth will become much clearer after today and, likely, much larger. Let’s just say he’ll be worth many billions of dollars more than he is now. He is not yet thirty years old.

Facebook, a company that I can’t quite believe could be worth that much and which I am at a total loss to explain to anyone who hasn’t dabbled in it, will go public today and many deranged people will be frantically trying to buy stock in the company. I will not. I’m too confused about just what Facebook is to invest money in it.

I fooled around in Facebook for a couple of years. I eventually had to step back and count my chips. What the hell am I doing here? I have books to read, stories to write and rounds of golf to play. Frankly, I’d be benefited more richly if I got more deeply into Outdoor Grilling by Zorn Burntfinger. And I have John Sandford’s latest book to read also (Buried Prey).

I had a few good friends on Facebook and a few new and intriguing ones with whom I would have been happy to keep in touch. I suggested to them that we communicate in that extremely old fashioned way – by email – but not a single one of them took me up on the offer. That means, I am sure, that they are either not interested in retaining the contact or they think I am a sick, stuck-in-the-mud, out-of-touch old fart. It’s just that there were things I wanted to say to Cecilia that I didn’t want to say to Ralph; and there were things about my photography in which Cooper would be interested that would have bored the hell out of Helen.

Today, I officially lose the argument, and Mr. Zuckerberg wins – big time! Yet, unless something spectacularly new happens, I’m off of Facebook – turned off by it and pissed off by it. If Maureen wants to me to see photographs of her grandkids, she can send them along the old-fashioned way – via email.

My friend, Sam, disagrees with me. So, I asked him to explain the benefit(s) of Facebook – beyond starting a revolution in Egypt, I mean – and he certainly couldn’t do it to my satisfaction. Oh, well!

To quote the famous P.T. Barnum, “There’s a zucker born every minute!”

And this is my Oregon grandson proudly showing off
his new baseball uniform just before his very first game!

Facebook World

How is it the Coen Brothers put it? This is no country for old men!
by Charlie Leck

My wife, who is computer challenged and has a difficult time keeping her email organized (she has 290 unread messages in her in-box), has opened a Facebook account. She immediately got dozens of requests to be friends with this person and that.

“How do I do that?” She screamed from her office out to me. I was preparing my coffee in the kitchen.

“You’ll figure it out,” I replied. Just keep playing around.

“I want to look at these pictures?” She screamed. “How do I do that?”

I was sitting over a small bowl of fruit now. I didn’t feel like moving.

“You’ll figure it out. Just keep playing around!”

I tried Facebook a few years ago. I ended up not liking it. It was strange, because I had just reconnected with a whole bunch of people from my childhood and I was curious about them. However, I ran into difficulties and got led to a web site that streamed malware into my computer. It cost me a significant amount of money to have it removed. The strain on my brain and having my computer down for a couple of days was the hardest part. I parted ways with my Facebook friends. I had hoped they might keep up with me by email – I asked them to -- but they didn’t. I guess you either do Facebook or you do nothing.

Maureen Kielly and Cecelia Parker are out there somewhere in a Facebook world and I’d love to make contact with them, but I just ain’t going through that experience again. Maybe, had I been a dozen years younger or so, I could have made it work.”

“Charlie, come help me with this Facebook thing. People want me to post a photograph! How do I do that?”

“I’m reading! I can’t help! Just figure it out. I’m sure you can buy a 400 page book in the store that will tell you how to do it. Maybe you can get one of the kids to teach you over Thanksgiving weekend.”

Facebook isn’t for old guys! Give me a break!

Look! I’m blogging, ma!

What the Heck is Facebook?

And why would I care? I don’t get it!
by Charlie Leck

Well, I broke down! I gave in! I created a Facebook account?

Why?

Because a number of people kept sending me emails telling me that I was listed as a friend on Facebook. Recently a new acquaintance from Luxembourg added me as a Facebook friend (Ff). I’d better see about this.

I heard the President has a Facebook account and so do lots of other distinguished and important people. I simply gave in!

So, now I’m on Facebook!

You know what? I haven’t the slightest idea what good it will do me or where I go from here with it. I can only assume Facebook is far too advanced for a person my age.

Maybe one of my Ffs, like Gina… or Spencer… or Patty… will help me figure it out. I keep hearing “it’s fun” but I guess I’ve got a lot to learn.

I’ll bet there’s even a book on the market called “Facebook for Dummies.” Can you imagine?

I created some kind of feed on Facebook today that is suppose to notify my friends whenever I post a new blog; so maybe a few of my Ffs will help me figure this out.

To those of my readers who think I’m an idiot for doing this, I think I concur!

I feel a bit like the book dealer at Majors & Quinn, when he wrote about joining Facebook on his blog (SOCIAL NETWORKING FOR INTROVERTS):

“God help me, I’ve started a facebook page… I can’t pretend to know how facebook works… Friend us, write on our wall, and watch as a cardigan-wearing introvert bookstore employee dips his toe into the world of social networking. It should be fun.”
The Pope, you know, to whom I never pay attention, has warned us that “obsessive” use of Facebook could isolate us from real interaction! I’ll be careful about that.

For the moment, I go to Facebook, log in and then stare at the page, wondering what I'm to do next. Pretty exciting.
