What’s going on in Russia?

The little people in Russia are fed up – way up to here!
by Charlie Leck

Over the weekend, I read the stories coming out of Russia – accounts about tens of thousands of people gathering to protest the recent putrid and fixed election. Good! Hooray! Let ‘em have it you folks. Start your shouting: “We’re angry as hell and we’re not going to take this anymore!”

It’s a new world we live in – a Facebook, Twitter, texting and emailing world that allows us instant contact with hundreds and even thousands of people. Russia is no exception.

And… “How ya’ gonna keep ‘em down on the farm after they’ve seen Paris?”

Think the Russian protests have anything to do with Occupy Wall Street? You bet they do! And, this is only the beginning of a very changed and new world. We’ve looked carefully and the king is naked!

Maxim Trudolubov, an editor of a daily biz paper in Moscow, gives us an interesting and honest report.

“The reaction to last weekend’s fraud-tainted parliamentary elections has been like nothing I have seen since the early 1990s.”

The dominance of Putin over the Russian political system has begun to fade. His announcement that he plans to run again for President – and perhaps for a term of 12 years – has the people of the street and factories very frustrated.

It will be interesting to keep our eyes on Mother Russia.

Follow the Money

Follow the money if you can, if you can! Follow all that money if you can! (Sing it to the tune of “She’ll be comin’ round the mountain!”)
by Charlie Leck

A former chief executive at MF Global says he hasn’t an idea whatsoever about what happened to all that money.

We are not talking here of a buck or two, you understand. In this case, Jon S. Corzine is talking about “many hundreds of millions of dollars.” In the end, the tally might add up to well over a billion dollars. Geez, Louise!

MF Global is currently being liquidated. The firm was supposed to keep funds invested by clients separate from its own corporate funds and reserves. Somehow they got all mixed up.

“How’d that happen, Mr. Corzine?”

The gentlemen from New Jersey didn’t have the slightest idea what had become of those funds or how they got all mixed up. Strange how guys from NJ tend to make oversights like this! Isn’t it?

Mr. Corzine is a former governor of New Jersey. He was also, for a time, a U.S. Senator from New Jersey.

The feds are, of course, investigating. That inquiry is being led by the FBI. Of course, Mr. Corzine has not been able to be helpful.

Corzine has, however, issued a touching apology to the company’s customers, who “are bearing the brunt of the impact of the firm’s backruptcy.”

No kidding, Mr. Corzine! No kidding!

An independent auditing company indicated that customers’ fund were adequately segregated prior to October 31 of last year. Sometime after midnight on the morning of October 31 those funds went missing.

Trick or treat!

On November 4, Corzine issued a statement indicating his “great sadness for what has transpired at MF Global…”

Oh, geez! Thanks Mr. Corzine!

Isn’t life wonderful? Still wondering why all those folks parading around on Wall Street, protesting, are so angry and bewildered?

Mr. Corzine is personally a very, very wealthy man. This huge mystery will have very little impact on him – unless, of course, he has to spend a bit of time in a federal prison for being so careless as to lose that billion dollars of other people’s money.

What a revoltin’ development this is?

It’s an amazing world, is it not? A billion here! A billion there!

Find a way to be helpful to those Wall Street Occupiers, will you?

What is the Occupy Movement all about?

I keep asking myself what Occupy Wall Street is all about and I keep trying out different answers on you!
by Charlie Leck

What the heck is the movement all about? These protests by the 99 percent? These gatherings that keep annoying the heck out of one city after another?

Move-On-Dot-Org tries to answer the question with a very powerful video. This short presentation opens with a very powerful statement by Elizabeth Warren. Ms. Warren is an extraordinary woman who will try to run for the U.S. Senate in Massachusetts in 2012 and I hope to goodness she gets elected. I keep hoping the nation is tiring of politicians who so blatantly favor corporate America and the 1 percent. Listen to Ms. Warren and see if you don’t agree with her very straightforward explanation of why we are in such a muddled economic mess in our nation today.

Ms. Warren is currently the Leo Gottlieb Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. She’s a very savvy person.

[Go here to watch the video and listen to Ms. Warren’s short statement!]

The Occupy Movement Keeps On Ticking!

What’s going on with this Occupy Movement? Could it possibly catch on?
by Charlie Leck

Are you still trying to figure out the Occupy Movement? Me, too! I’ve listened to a number of interviews with protestors and I’ve read a number of accounts about the individuals who are involved. Anger and disappointment are the only two constants I can find among them.

Occupy is the central name – whether it is Occupy Wall Street or Occupy Seattle! However, as the NY Times pointed out in a story in Tuesday’s paper, “But not every group that has embraced the name marches in the same contentious lockstep!”

The protestors range from people who want marijuana legalized to people who oppose our involvement in foreign wars.

Yet, I keep sensing that economics is at the bottom, or base, of every occupation movement in every city. It is more and more difficult for people who consider themselves middle class to live like middle class people (I wrote succinctly about this phenomenon yesterday).

There does seem to be a common sentiment that the protest is against a system that is stacked against the middle class. The rich and the connected are getting along fine. As one moves down the economic ladder, life and one’s options get tough.

Talk to the conservative rich about these protests and you’ll generally get a smile. “Patience,” they counsel, “and then all will return to normal.”

What does that mean? Is it that the economy will finally improve and with it the situation of the middle class? Or does such advice to be patient simply mean the protestors will eventually tire out and give up and go home to more comfortable places to sleep?

Have any of you asked yourselves if there is a possible connection between these occupy protests in the United States and the Arab Spring? Oh, my! I’ve gone and said it! It is not a stupid question. It is worthy of thought and consideration.

So far the protests are too small to be compared to what happened in Egypt or to what is happening in Syria. But what if? What if? What if it were hundreds of thousands in New York City instead of a few thousand?

How would authorities here react? What could we do after we so criticized Arab governments for their tough crackdowns?

A chess piece will have been moved into a check position and authorities will have been challenged to respond. With only a few hundred protestors here in Minneapolis, it has been easy for government officials and police to handle the situation; but what if the numbers get up to seven or eight thousand?

What if fed-up folks from up there in Lake Wobegon decide to come down here to the cities to join ‘em in their demonstrations? What if Dorothy, at the Chatterbox Café, begins suggesting that “Maybe them folks down there in the Twin Cities has got somethin’ in what they’re a doin’ anyway!” What if the Norwegian bachelor farmers and the Whippets baseball team agree with Dorothy? You can be sure they’re talkin’ about all this over at Ralph’s Pretty Good Grocery! It’s not like Lutherans to protest, you know, but, then again, you never know!

I wonder, too, if all of this is the other side of the coin from the Tea Party Movement!

When will Congresswoman Bachman start calling the protestors communists or, at least, suggest they are communist controlled?

So much to watch over and wait to see where it goes!

Occupy Wall Street

I’m pushing my chips into the center of the table and declaring that I’m all in with Occupy Wall Street!
by Charlie Leck

I’m not too sure what the Occupy Wall Street movement is all about, but there is something about it that I like. I hope you’ve been reading a bit about this crazy, unorchestrated protest movement.

Jesse Ventura, our former, nutty Governor showed up at one of the rallies here in Minnesota the other day. He said he’s against the growing influence of corporations in American politics and he “thinks” that’s what the movement is all about.

Am I really sympathetic to a movement in which Jesse Ventura has put some stock? Hmm!

It is a crazy movement, but I join Ventura in saying, “I love it.”

The protestors (some of them) have said they are opposed to “economic injustice.” Yup! Me too! Who, mind you, is in favor of economic injustice?

Give me a sign (a placard) and tell me where to line up! I’m even willing to bed down in a sleeping bag on cool Minnesota evenings. Can you imagine how my body will be aching and screaming at me when I wake up in the morning after a night of sleep on cold concrete under my under-cushioned sleeping bag?

As Eugene Robinson says in his column about Occupy Wall Street: “I love that there are no rules, just tendencies.”

Okay! I love it, too.

Are there any other 70+ year olds out there who want to show up at a rally and spend the evening with me in my sleeping bag? Wait! I think I said that wrong (incorrectly)! Damn it! You know what I mean.

This is the movement of the young. They need some old guys who have been there before – who have marched on the Federal Building and Federal Reserve Bank before! We didn’t know what we were doing then either! We just knew we had to do something. For god’s sake, the country is going to hell in a handbag. We’ve got to do something! Let’s march and demonstrate and sleep together in a snug, little sleeping bag.

Don’t think I’m trying to be negative! I’m not bashing these demonstrators! I am four-square behind them! I just wish I was young again so that I’d fit in better (into a sleeping bag, I mean).

Damn it! There are thousands of us old guys and gals who can remember being where you are, you lucky, young shits. Give it to ‘em and give it to ‘em good!

America has lost its way. They’ve forgotten what’s important. They think excruciating wealth is what’s important! Jesus, no!

I think I’ve figured out what these crazy protests are all about. I think they are marches against selfishness and greed. God, yes! That’s what these ravings and ragings are about. Selfishness and greed sucks and America is mired in it. How do we free ourselves before we all sucked into a black hole?

Line up with Occupy Wall Street! They don’t make a damned bit of sense, but they’re wonderful! I’m all in!
