What the Right Wing in America Really Wants

Bernie Sanders is an independent U.S. Senator from Vermont. He is one of my everlasting heroes (my paladin) and always will be. If I want the truth on an issue, I turn to Bernie.
by Charlie Leck

There are an awful lot of people out there who are supporting the actions of the right-wing of the Republican Party. I’m fully aware that they do not know what they are doing and they don’t understand what this very radical political movement really wants to do.

Here’s a video of what Bernie Sanders recently said about just this subject. I pulled it from his Facebook page… (be sure to follow Bernie on Facebook).

“The truth is that the current government shutdown and the willingness of right-wing Republican extremists to default on the U.S. debt for the first time in American history is part of a right-wing ideological agenda which goes far beyond defunding the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).

“The Koch brothers, and their billionaire allies, want to end Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the E.P.A, the concept of the minimum wage and virtually every federal program passed during the last 80 years designed to protect the well-being of working people, the elderly, the sick, the children and the poor. Everyone should understand that their long-term goal is to move this country into an oligarchic form of society where the political and economic life of the nation is controlled by a handful of extremely wealthy families.”

Watch Bernie on a recent MSNBC interview discussing these issues.

When I read some of the things that a number of my Facebook friends say about their support of the radical right movement in American politics, it really frightens me. The changes this movement wants to bring about it America will be very far reaching and will have a dire impact on so very many people! Oh, my! Medicare, Social Security and the environment would be in big trouble under their plan. So would many other institutions we simply take for granted in America these days. Please try harder to understand what these fellows (like the Koch brothers) want for America. I find it hard to believe it is what you want!

If the Creek Don’t Rise!

Wasn’t that a Tennessee Ernie Ford song?... Oh, well, it was something like that. Remind me! And, the President was remarkable in the Miami heat yesterday, laying it all out for us so clearly. Yet, the House of Representatives, the Koch brothers, the Tea Party and the U.S. Senators from the traditional southern states will disagree.
by Charlie Leck

As a young man, I was a Tennessee Ernie Ford fan. Oh, my, but the man could sing. He had a weekly television show (black and white) and he always closed it out by saying: “See you next week if the good Lord is willin’ and the creek don’t rise!” Since I hadn’t heard one of Ernie’s songs in so many years, I had to hunt one down on the internet. When Ernie sings How Great Thou Art, a guy almost wants to fall to his knees in devotion – almost! (Hear him sing the great hymn here.)

The creek rose this week here at Native Oaks Farm and it rose up with a bit of ferocity. It took the bridge into our farm with it – the only civilized way to get into the place.

The weather events of the last week have seriously tested my devotion. I looked up to the heavens and shouted out my question: “What the f-bleep is going on here?”

My wife is devastated. This is really her farm and not mine. She’s lovingly poured the last 33 years of her life into this place, working most days from early in the morning until late into the evening. We’ve had our disagreements about the time and energy she puts into this place and the time and attention that I don’t get as a result. Yet, I’ve always admired the love she’s had for this farm and how devoted she's been to it.

Well, the weekend storm, a week ago, was a little too much for our wonderful spot on this earth to handle. The lovely, little creek that meanders through it turned into a bit of a monster and kept on rising over the weekend and also even in the week following the storm as the run-off water leaked into it.

A bridge – maybe 70 or 80 years old – was the main victim of the rising creek. It’s quite amazing how we get attached to such things. I liked that old bridge and didn’t want to see it go.

I’ve told myself a couple dozen times to stop feeling sorry for myself. “There are people with real problems,” I’ve said, “ – real problems! You’ll awaken in a cozy bed tomorrow and there will be orange juice awaiting you and a wonderful, hot cup of coffee. It isn’t the Earth’s fault – all these problems – but it is just that we don’t know how to plan properly for special times like this. I’m sorry that I snapped at you, Earth. You are wonderful and your abundance sustains us!”

This isn’t really a blog about our little bridge or our farm…
Did you listen to the President’s speech in Miami yesterday? Now, those are real problems that the man is outlining for us. Within 50 to 100 years, Miami may be considered America’s Atlantis. Most of the city is only five feet above sea level. The current pace of global warming will mean that Miami would be totally disabled in the near future. Still folks won’t believe it! We simply won’t learn to get along with this precious Earth.

Those phenomenally wealthy Koch brothers don’t agree either. They call the president “Chicken Little.” The creek simply won’t rise they tell us; and it seems like many Americans are willing to gamble on that.

Well, the president may be lots of things, but he isn’t chicken. The actions he announced in Miami yesterday will put both his reputation and his legacy at stake. Faced with a Congress that will not act, the president is trying to use the power of the executive office to initiate environment actions to save the earth. In my opinion it rivals President Lyndon Johnson’s brave actions surrounding the Voting Rights Act (to which SCOTUS* did great damage yesterday).

As I sit here, in my wonderful tree-top study, I can look out at the rising creek – higher and wider than I have ever seen it -- higher and higher and higher.

"And God said, 'Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.' And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. And God said, 'Let the earth put forth vegetation, plants yielding seed, each according to its kind, upon the earth.'  And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good." [Genesis 1:9-13]

All I’ve got to say is “Yes!”

One story in Thursday’s New York Times pleased me a great deal. Let me say that more strongly: “I took great pleasure from one story in Thursday’s New York Times.”
by Charlie Leck

Here’s the headline to a story in the New York Times, by Ashley Parker, that just really pleased me: “Little to Show for Cash Flood by Big Donors!

I made that neat move that Tiger Woods makes after he sinks a 35 foot putt to win a golf tournament; that is, I pumped my fist with great vigor into the grand space of emptiness before me.

“Yes!” I shouted with great exuberance. “Yes!”

Sheldon Adelson was one of the big losers! The New York Times calls him “the biggest single donor in political history.”

“Yes!”

It appears that Mr. Adelson supported eight candidates “with tens of millions of dollars” through Super PACs. All of them lost on Tuesday!

“Yes!”

Karl Rove was the organizational genius who pulled all these mega-rich folks together and tutored them on how to funnel their money – perhaps as much as 300 million dollars – into various Super PACs that would then spend the money on behalf of the chosen conservative candidates. Rove has egg on his face today – egg that covers up completely that shit-eating grin that normal spreads across his kisser.

“Yes!”

One of those mega-millionaires spent approximately 100 million of her own dollars dollars on her own campaign. Linda McMahon, a Republican from Connecticut, spent the money on her own candidacy for the U.S. Senate. She lost!

“Yes!”

“The bulk of that outside money came from a relatively small group of wealthy donors, unleashed by the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, which allowed unlimited contributions to super PACs. Harold Simmons, a Texas industrialist, gave $26.9 million to super PACs backing Mr. Romney and Republican candidates for the Senate. Joe Ricketts, the owner of the Chicago Cubs, spent close to $13 million to bankroll a super PAC attacking Mr. Obama over federal spending.
“Bob Perry, a Texas homebuilder, poured more than $21 million into super PACs active in the presidential race and the Senate battles in Florida and Virginia, where Democrats narrowly prevailed. A donor network marshaled by Charles and David Koch, the billionaire industrialists and conservative philanthropists, reportedly sought to raise $400 million for tax-exempt groups that are not required to disclose their spending.”

“Yes!”

Unlimited contributions and secret money in American politics have resulted in the past in scandal and the corruption of government decisions,’ said Fred Wertheimer, the president of Democracy 21, a watchdog group. ‘This will happen again in the future.’”

“Indeed!”

On Wednesday in the Wall Street Journal, a piece written by Karl Rove placed the blame for the election loss on a number of malefactors; like, Hurricane Sandy (it’s possible we could identify that culprit more precisely as God), the editors of the nation’s major and influential newspapers (e.g., the New York Times, the Washington Post and the LA Times), that working stiff who captured Mitt Romney on a cell phone video talking about the 47 percent he didn’t care about, dirty tricks by Obama’s campaign and Mitt Romney (of course). Rove accepts none of the blame.

In a tweet on Wednesday, his royal hindass, Donald J. Trump wrote: “Congrats to @Karl Rove on blowing $400 million this cycle. Every race @CrossroadsGPS ran ads in, the Republicans lost. What a waste of money!”

“Yes!”

What Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission Hath Wrought!

Make no doubt about it, the spending reports on the 2010 and 2012 elections are clear; they show that the Democratic Party cannot keep up with the Republicans in raising campaign funds outside of their party organizations. Republican outside spending in 2010 nearly doubled what Democrats could spend and it has more than doubled what Democrats have spent in 2012.
by Charlie Leck

What does that opening statement mean? The Democrats do all right against Republicans when campaign spending is left to what can be done by the party organizations themselves, but the Republicans can raise twice as much when it comes to outside organizations like the money given by billionaires to the SUPER PACs.

…”The result has been a stupefying array of PACs, 501(c)4s and 501(c)6s that even professionals can barely keep track of….
The first chart, provided by the Center for Responsive Politics, shows that outside spending tilted left in every year from 2000 to 2008, but that in 2010 — in the aftermath of deregulation — the balance skewed decisively to the right. In the current 2011-12 election cycle, it shifted overwhelmingly to the right:”

The downside of all this for the Republican Party, according to Edsall in his story, is that the bulk of this funding is come from right-wing elements in the Party that are very disruptive – elements that are “more willing to go to extremes: see the billboards showing Obama bowing down before an Arab Sheik or the ads and DVD claiming that Obama is the bastard son of the African American communist, Frank Marshall Davis.” You can see Jeremy Peters story about that billboard here.

What the Republican Party is very likely to find out, in the long run, is that it is no longer the Republican Party, but some very far right wing organization controlled by a long list of the nut cases and whacko religions in the nation. Edsall carefully explains the dangers in all of this for the Republican Party itself. I think people like Sheldon Adelson and the Koch brothers are destroying the Republican Party and doing a huge disservice to America.

Welcome to the America created for us by the United States Supreme Court!

Be sure to go to this story and read the entire account – especially if you’re concerned about where Citizens v. United is taking us.

…”The displacement of the parties by super rich men determined to flex their financial muscles in another giant step away from democracy.” [Thomas B. Edsall, in the above referenced story.]
Edsall is a professor of journalism at Columbia University and the author of the book “The Age of Austerity: How Scarcity Will Remake American Politics.”

Observing the Politics of Today

Here are some simple observations, right off the cuff, about the politics of today…
by Charlie Leck

üPaul Ryan, before he became the Republican vice presidential candidate, was for Medicare cuts. Now he’s against them. (No comment! Just an observation!)

üVice President Joe Biden better sharpen his game. He’s currently making some careless slips of the tongue. Joe’s feeling a little too good about himself and he’s gotten over-confident.

üWe used to think about our nation as the “united” states. Now we think about our states as red or blue, and not united!

üMitt Romney assures us he has paid, at least, 13 percent taxes on his income for the last dozen years “or so.” However, he and his wife have made in clear that they’ll release no more income tax files for our review. The candidate’s wife, Ann, has spoken up about the subject of releasing more income tax records. She shows way too much anger and that sends a message that gets some people even more interested. She observed that the Democrats want the information as “ammunition.” Is there something hidden there that could be ammunition? She assures us that Mitt is honest. “His integrity is just golden,” she says. The fact is, at 13 percent, Romney is paying far less in taxes than most middle class families because he has so much “investment income,” which is taxed at a far lower rate than average earned income. Romney thinks his charitable giving totals should be considered as well. His wife promises us that they give 10 percent of their income to charity. That, I assume, includes their church.

üNew voter i.d. laws that are being passed by states around the nation will probably, in years after 2012, cost the Democrats about 1 percent of their current vote totals. That will be a huge blow to the party. Mike Turzai, a leader in the Pennsylvania Republican party, which currently has voter i.d., has boasted that the new voting process “is going to allow Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania – done!”

üSuper PACs are having a much bigger impact on this election than people ever believed they would. Billionaires, like the Koch brothers, are funding a number of campaign organizations that produce incredibly distorted (perhaps, then, “dirty”) advertising. I just can’t imagine why ordinary folks aren’t rising up in anger about the modern election being controlled by the wealthy. The nose-ring led members of the Tea Party love what they’re seeing, however. The Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision is having a far bigger impact than even the wildest negativists thought it would.

üIf you think the presidential campaign is mean-spirited, let me tell you: It’s gonna get a lot worse!

üThe battle for my vote (the Senior vote) is just getting under way. Just wait ‘til you see how they’re going to chase our butts. More and more political observers are saying this election will turn on the Senior vote.

üMichael Williamson, an old Obama ally, is going to get his 15 minutes of fame at the GOP National Convention by speaking out against the President. Et tu Brute?

üIn Minnesota, Michele Bachmann appears to be lying low. What frightens me is that she is not frightened at all about winning the upcoming election. Sooner or later, she’ll need to start campaigning, however, and then I can have some fun bringing you a host of her stupid comments. I can’t wait!

üHere in Minnesota we had a historically low turnout for the primary elections of both major parties and that allowed the inspired right-wingers to work their will. Koch Brothers money was very successful here in my own state legislative district.

üThe Koch Brothers understand ole’ Tip O’Neil’s political rule #1: All politics is local!

üI took a careful look through the week’s obituaries in this morning’s local paper, and my name wasn’t there. I can breathe easier for awhile.

üMinnesota’s current Governor, Mark Dayton, has taken the courageous step of condemning the actions of one of our state’s former governors. On this past Thursday, Dayton said: “I am appalled by Governor Ramsey’s words and by his encouragement of vigilante violence against innocent people; and I repudiate them.” Dayton was talking about an incident that took place 150 years ago in Minnesota. At that time, Governor Ramsey banned members of the Dakota tribe from dwelling or entering Minnesota and, more strongly, went on to say: “The Sioux Indians of Minnesota must be exterminated or driven forever beyond the borders of the state.” It was a dark moment in our state’s history. Indeed, there was an angry uprising of the Dakota against white Minnesotans; but the native Americans had been cheated and they were starving – and they felt hopeless. I’m currently reading an e-book, published by our local newspaper, about Little Crow, the reluctant leader of the uprising [In the Footsteps of Little Crow]. It’s an extremely well written book, but it leaves one saddened. I’ll have more to say about all that in the coming days.

üIsrael continues to drop hints about a possible attack on Iran, to disable that nation’s nuclear weapons development program. Shimon Peres indicates that Israel can’t do it alone. One doesn’t even need to read between the lines to understand he is asking for international assistance – or, at least, international support and approval. “It is clear to us,” Peres said, “that we have to proceed together with America… as serious as the danger is, this time at least we are not alone.” Oh, boy!

üAccording to an article in the NY Times, by Rebecca Berg, there are fewer undecided voters out there than we have been led to believe. She indicates that the “slice” of undecided voters is very small, but will make the difference in this election.

üIs it a big surprise that the GOP is reporting “strong fund-raising” that includes a major influx of cash? The Republican Party has spent 20 million dollars on attack ads in the last month. And you didn’t think the Citizens United decision was a really big deal! Oh, boy!

Who is Herman Cain?

To understand Herman Cain one has to also understand the Koch brothers!
by Charlie Leck

Since I wrote the last draft of this blog, I read about the name of Herman Cain's campaign organization. It is Americans for Cain (AFC). Nothing too startling, is it? However, as you read this blog notice how similar it is to so many other organizations in the conservative world that have been funded by and encouraged by the very strange Koch brothers. [You can view the first ad in Iowa that AFC is running on Cain's behalf. It goes after both Perry and Romney.]

So, by all indications, Herman Cain is “sitting in the catbird seat” in Iowa. Oh, how I remember the legendary, great baseball broadcaster for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Red Barber, using that expression to describe situations in ballgames. For the moment at least, that’s where Herman Cain is among Republicans in Iowa and, according to some political analysts, nationwide – he’s in the catbird seat as well.

What if, to everyone’s surprise, Herman Cain got the nomination in the Republican Party? Who the heck is Herman Cain?

Well, hold on to your hats folks, because I think we are all about to find out about him in the coming months. Those of us who thought he was a mere joke are about to learn a lesson about hasty assessments. Herman Cain is for real and we’d better take a close look at him.

I like to think of him as a former resident of Minneapolis. He came up here from Atlanta in 1977 to go to work for the Pillsbury Company after beginning his business career with Coca-Cola. He rose quickly through the ranks and took an important position with the company’s Burger King operations and then took over as the President of the Godfather’s Pizza division in 1986. Two years later, he and some other investors purchased the pizza retailer and began running it as an independent company. He resigned from that company in 1996.

Herman Cain has a head on his shoulders and I think he is in this campaign for real. I also think, in spite of the doubters, that he can raise the money to make a real race of it. Yet, he is also an enigma and he should be looked at cautiously.

You could easily go to Wikipedia or many other sources to get biographical information about Herman Cain, but I’ll give you a quick summary here – by way of introduction. I’ll try to be fair even though I’m generally suspicious of his candidacy because of his pretty close connections with the Koch brothers and Americans for Prosperity (AFP), which is pretty solidly funded by the Koch brothers. (See more about AFP a few paragraphs down this blog!)

Herman Cain
was born in December, 1945 in Memphis. Twenty-two years later, he graduated from Morehouse College as a math major and received a MA in computer sciences a couple of years later. After graduation, he worked for a short time as a civilian employee of the United States Navy. His business career began to take off in Atlanta, where he worked for Coca-Cola as a computer analyst and quickly rose through the ranks. In 1977, as I’ve already explained, he joined Pillsbury up here in Minnesota.

A fellow I played some golf with up here in the 90s, who ran both Green Giant and Burger King for a while, has been quoted as speaking highly of Cain’s time with Pillsbury.

He has served on the board of directors of a number of significant companies and was also the Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City (’95-’96), serving as a Deputy Chairman (’92-94).

Currently, Cain writes an opinion column for the North Star Writers Group. He’s also done some radio work and has identified himself as a strong conservative through both these media endeavors.

Over the years, he has received honorary degrees from Creighton U., Johnson & Wales U., Morehouse College, the University of Nebraska, NYC Tech., Purdue U., Suffolk U., and Tougaloo College.

In 2005, Cain began working for Americans for Prosperity (AFP). There, Cain worked with Mark Block, who would later become his campaign manager.

He lives these days in Atlanta (suburban Sandy Springs) and is a member of the Antioch Baptist Church North, which boasts that it is a liberal, activist church. Cain has served as an associate minister of the congregation without pay. It appears that he sometimes a divisive force in the church, offering opinions that differ greatly from the senior pastor.

He is married and has two children.

The heart of his current campaign appears to be a plan to restore economic strength and power to America though a 9-9-9 tax plan. He explains it simply as a replacement for the current tax code and would institute a 9 percent, across-the-board tax on income, a 9 percent business transactions tax and a 9 percent federal sales tax. (Robert Reich, who I admire, is an ardent critic of the Cain plan and calls it “a fraud” and says it “raises taxes on the poor and lowers them on the rich!” [Click here to read Reich’s criticism!] And, Tuesday’s Washington Post carried this front page story about Rick Perry’s new flat-tax plan.

That’s a decent sketch of Herman Cain’s life. To this point I think I’ve been unbiased, but now let me turn to what troubles me and to the disagreements I have with the Cain philosophy. In many ways it would be a blessing for the Obama administration if Cain were his opponent. It would be difficult for anyone to agree with all of Cain’s radical ideas and Obama would capture the fabled center of the campaign.

What is Americans for Prosperity (AFP)?
AFP appears quite certainly to be the organization that provides the major funds to keep the Tea Party Movement going! It also appears to front the very special interests of the Koch brothers, a couple of billionaire guys I’ve written about here several times. AFP clearly works against the interest of progressives and the initiatives of the Democratic Party, including labor unions and the protection of the environment (lobbying against international climate talks). It stands against most health care reform proposals. The organization is emphatically anti-Obama. The AFP budget in 2010 was in excess of 40 million dollars and most of that was spent in the election to defeat Democrats.

If you want to understand how AFP works and, more importantly, the Koch brothers, I strongly recommend an amazing article in The New Yorker by Jane Mayer: Covert Operations. It’s not a short piece by any means, but it’s extremely well written and it will give you a very good look at the goals of libertarians, David and Charles Koch.

“In Washington, [David] Koch is best known as part of a family that has repeatedly funded stealth attacks on the federal government, and on the Obama Administration in particular.”

“With his brother Charles, who is seventy-four, David Koch owns virtually all of Koch Industries, a conglomerate, headquartered in Wichita, Kansas, whose annual revenues are estimated to be a hundred billion dollars.”

There’s a Koch Industries refinery operating here in Minnesota, just southeast of the Twin Cities. The company also operates refineries in Alaska and Texas. The company also owns a number of other companies, a few of which are Brawny (paper towels), Dixie (cups) Georgia-Pacific (lumber), Stainmaster (carpet) and Lycra.

Koch Industries, after Minnesota’s Cargill Corporation, is the second largest privately owned company in America.

David and Charles are worth somewhere around 17 to 25 billion dollars each! Only Warren Buffett and Bill Gates are worth more among Americans. Unlike Buffett and Gates, the Koch brothers are libertarians. They believe in and work toward much lower personal and corporate taxes and much less regulation of American industry. They also oppose the amount of social services that America provides to the needy through the federal government.

Now, on the other hand, a study released by the University of Massachusetts at Amherst accuses Koch Industries of being one of the top ten polluters in the United States. Greenpeace goes further and says Koch Industries is the “kingpin of climate science denial.”

“They have a pattern of lawbreaking, political manipulation and obfuscation!”
Charles Lewis, founder of the Center for Public Integrity, puts it more strongly: “The Kochs are on a whole different level. There’s no one else who has spent this much money. The sheer dimension of it is what sets them apart. They have a pattern of lawbreaking, political manipulation and obfuscation. I’ve been in Washington since Watergate, and I’ve never seen anything like it. They are the Standard Oil of our times.”

AFP is the nation’s leading advocate of the Tea Party Movement and AFP exists on a foundation constructed by and funded by the Koch brothers.

Peggy Venerable, a close friend of the Koch brothers and a clear organizer on their behalf, recently said: “I was part of the Tea Party before it was cool.”

It’s clear that the Koch brothers want to bring down President Obama. He shouldn’t take it personally because the brothers oppose anyone with a progressive agenda – anyone who wants to take a strong stand on protecting the economy – anyone who wants to increase protections for the workers – anyone who wants the wealthy to pay a greater share in funding the American agenda and the American dream.

David and Charles were raised as libertarians – radical ones at that. Their father, Fred Koch, was one of the original members of the John Birch Society that had been behind the incredible spread of the fear of communist take overs in the 50s. The Society considered Dwight David Eisenhower, our President, as a communist. Fred was adamant about communist control over the civil rights movement of the late 50s and 60s. Though it is clear that the two brothers grew to think the ideas of the John Birch Society were on the “whacko” side, they seemed to transfer that distrust and suspicion to the very government of the United States.

Look at some of the ideas of the libertarian movement that Charles and David Koch support so vehemently. They want to abolish the F.B.I. and the C.I.A. and federal regulatory agencies like the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Department of Energy. They want to end Social Security and minimum wage laws, gun control and all personal and corporate income taxes. The Libertarian Party has endorsed the legalization of prostitution, recreational drugs and suicide.

William Buckley, America’s best know and most famous conservative, called the movement “Anarcho-Totalitarianism.”

The Libertarian Party was a flop in America and the Koch Brothers knew their approach to politics had to change. The brothers have created numerous foundations and political action committees and funded them with hundreds of millions of dollars – more money than we will ever know about because the bucks are nearly untraceable.

The Koch brothers are behind the creation of the Cato Institute, the nation’s leading far-right-wing think tank. No institution has been more involved in promoting aggressive opposition to the climate-change movement than Cato.

Think about it! The Kochs are considered among the very biggest polluters in America. The Koch brothers fund dozens of organizations that pooh-pooh any concepts of global-warming and pollution. You don’t suppose there is a connection, do you?

Give me a giant break, will you?

The brothers have set up and funded a number of these ultra-conservative think tanks and some of them in surprising places. One, for example, is at George Mason University – a public institution. It’s called the Mercatus Center and promotes itself as being part of the University. The Kochs control it and the University hosts it. Something doesn’t smell right.

It’s through Koch brother dollars that Citizens for the Environment was set up. It calls acid rain and global warming a “myth.” So far no one has been able to find any members of this organization and it appears to be only a spinoff organization of Citizens for a Sound Economy (another group supported by the Koch brothers).

The Koch brothers have established themselves as patrons of radical, right-wing, anti-establishmentarianism in America. The over-riding concept they want to sell, however, is that strong pollution controls hurt American industry and the American economy and that the concept of global warming is a farce.

And, Herman Cain is their man!

Now, granted and fully admitted, the guts of this blog is based on the extraordinary article by Jane Mayer and I promised you that the article is carefully sourced and appropriate and impressive documentation is provided. As I said earlier, it’s very lengthy, but you’ll learn just how deeply the Kochs influence contemporary ultra-conservative political thinking. Their fortune is the engine driving strange conservatism in America today. She concludes her long essay with this paragraph:

“The Kochs have long depended on the public’s not knowing all the details about them. They have been content to operate what David Koch has called ‘the largest company that you’ve never heard of.’ But with the growing prominence of the Tea Party, and with increased awareness of the Kochs’ ties to the movement, the brothers may find it harder to deflect scrutiny. Recently, President Obama took aim at the Kochs’ political network. Speaking at a Democratic National Committee fund-raiser, in Austin, he warned supporters that the Supreme Court’s recent ruling in the Citizens United case—which struck down laws prohibiting direct corporate spending on campaigns—had made it even easier for big companies to hide behind ‘groups with harmless-sounding names like Americans for Prosperity.’ Obama said, ‘They don’t have to say who, exactly, Americans for Prosperity are. The Koch brothers will be an enormous force in the 2012 elections. The Supreme Court has made the use of such influence so much easier than it was in past elections. It will be difficult to stand up to the fortune they will spend to spread their message and to elect their candidates.

If the American people could understand who is driving these ideas and how that particular political agenda benefits large corporations and the extremely wealthy, then they might rise up in united numbers to vote against such extremism.

Now, we began with Herman Cain and ended up discussing the Koch brothers. I hope you see the connection. Mr. Cain is their man! See this extremely good article on Alternet if you want to understand that further. You'll also find information there about Mark Block, who organizes for Mr. Cain and runs the campaign. For instance, Block was banned from involvement in Wisconsin politics for a period of three years because of violations of fair campaign law. Block also chaired Wisconsin's chapter of the AFP for six years. Alternet draws very clear lines from Herman Cain to his involvement with the Koch boys. Then read on about Cain's campaign staff and how deeply they have been involved in the ultra-conservative movement in American politics.
