Does Anyone Ever Listen to the People?

Play the above song for peace!

Who will history judge as the instigator of the war that may come in Syria? There will be many versions to the answer.
by Charlie Leck

If America sends a number of missiles crashing down on Syria, will our nation be considered the instigator of a war? Or, did Syrian citizens begin the war when they revolted against the nation’s current leadership. Or was it Assad who began the war by so seriously mistreating his people? I can only imagine there will be different answers for different people.

I don’t want no war no more!
Honest to God, we’re a people tired – we Americans – of the price, the energy and the human life that is expended on war. We are tired! Exhausted!

Aren’t there other ways! Can’t brilliant and talented people find other ways to solve such problems?

Who is this Assad guy – this Bashar al-Assad, the President of Syria? In an interview with Le Figaro yesterday, President Assad said this of President Obama: “For us, a strong man prevents rather than starts a war… Obama is weak because he is facing pressure from within the United States.”

Assad denies being responsible for the gassing of his own people. He declares that his fight is against al-Qaeda.

“We are fighting terrorists… They are not interested in reform or in politics. The only way to deal with them is to annihilate them.”

America talks now of sending new and advanced weapons to the rebels – the Free Syrian Army.

Where is the truth? The tired people want to know! Will we be arming al-Qaeda? Isn’t it permissible to ask? Does John McCain know the answer? Does President Obama? Does Francois Hollande?

Dump it in the lap of the United Nations and demand that they do something! Do something or disband as a fake! Where is the thinking of the Nonviolent Peace Force? Bring this organization in to sit down with rebels and the President of Syria for talks.

We – the people – we don’t want no war no more? Does anyone ever listen to the people?

On the Verge of Peace

America seems always to be walking nervously, on shaky legs, along the ledge of war. Wherever we turn as a nation there are, at any given time, the possibilities of war.
by Charlie Leck

What say you about Egypt? Syria? Shall we involve our troops? [Troop is such an impersonal noun isn’t it? It is a man – that troop – or perhaps just a boy or a young woman.]

There seems always the temptation to get involved. Some presidents – perhaps most of them – have been unable to avoid the entanglements of war. When I look at my life time alone, no president has been free of its draw; not Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush or Barack Obama.

Does that not seem remarkable to you? Incredible, perhaps? Throughout my life-time the nation has been almost constantly at war (even when we tried calling them other things, like police actions). There have only been some short periods of lull when it seemed our nation was not engaged in war. And even in those years there was the constant, tense and formidable threat of war.

The fool says...
...the United Nations has certainly done no good in the matter. The wise man counters that it would have been immensely worse – these last hundred years – without the U.N. to broker peace.

Let the United Nations make decisions about Syria and Egypt! We should not be unilaterally deciding to send weapons and/or troops into any of these engagements or places of disruption. These are not decisions for Senator John McCain to make – nor for President Obama, for that matter. Let the nations of the world decide what is right and just amongst nations and within nations.

We Don’t Need No War No More!

John McCain has returned from a somewhat secretive trip to Syria. His Lordship found the rebels wanting and in need of weapons (serious and powerful weapons). He’s telling us all that the U.S. must send such weapons pronto!
by Charlie Leck

“But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy.” [James 3:17]

America, in the last 50 years has racked up meaningless and unnecessary war after war – from Vietnam to Iraq. Many of them have been built upon lies or, at best, serious miscalculations and erroneous information.

We don’t need another war!

John McCain, the U.S. Senator from Arizona and former presidential candidate, seems to think we do. Oh, I know, he’s only calling upon us to supply weapons for the citizen rebels in Syria.

A friend of mine once said: “Things begin where we thought they ended and we often do not recognize the beginnings until historians explain them.”

Korea was not a war. It was a police-action. They told us again and again. Tanks, fighter-jets, battleships and aircraft carriers and thousands of dead soldiers, taken together, says “war” to me. Almost 40,000 Americans died in battle in Korea.

Neither did we declare war in Cuba, Vietnam, Granada, Kuwait, Iraq or Afghanistan. We only supplied air support in Libya.

The steps that lead to war are often untraceable. The rising and falling tides of time erase and wash away the tracks upon the shores of distant lands.

We cannot fight every battle. Such erodes our spirits. Each misstep increases the numbers of our enemies and the future dangers we must face.

Should we supply weapons to the militant rebels in Syria we shall have taken a side. Many wise people are estimating that 10 to 20 percent of that weaponry will pass into the hands of radicals and terrorists.

Why not let other nations lead the fighting in this instance? Why can’t other nations supply weapons and equipment of war to the rebels?

Resist, Mr. President, with all your might. We don’t need no more war no more!

As the lyrics to Bob Marley’s song go…

Trouble we don't need (we don't need),
(We don't need) Lord, knows! -
We don't need no more war (no more trouble).
No more trouble - we don't need no more - more trouble!
