Watch Out for Hugh Downs Infomercial

Book gets terrible reviews
by Charlie Leck

I'm seeing ads everywhere for the medical books being recommended in infomercials by Hugh Downs. Watch out! It's apparently a big rip off. I almost bit on one of the ads but decided to read a few reviews. Everything I've read is awful, like this one...

"I actually feel sorry for Hugh Downs, bless his heart. I think he was duped by the people in this informercial. He had such an illustrious career and should have known better than to back a book full of info you could get simply by searching the net. There are various other books with info like this too that should be shut down! Prevention Magazine is the only place to get real info, and they've been spouting all this for over 40 years. Shut down this infomercial ASAP!"

  1. Yes I was taken in by seeing Hugh Down's face on the infomercial but unlike you I actually bought the books. What a waste of money that was.

  2. I'm glad I bothered to look up the background publisher on the Healing Books and also to find your blog. You have just saved me $40 plus amd I thank you very much. What gets me is how people offer "life saving" health advice (on page 243) and then want to get paid for it. Most would gladly help others for free. Of course the request for money is the giveaway it's a scam. Thanks again

  3. It is indeed discouraging to see someone of Hugh Downs' stature stoop to such a sleazy infomercial. But it's like what Richard Chamberlain said when asked why he had done a cheesy knockoff of _The China Syndrome_: "I needed to pay off a beach house in Malibu." Downs must have one (or more) "beach houses" to pay off, and doesn't care what he does to his reputation to get the money.

  4. i read these comments - actually everyone should read these - how sad -- someone thinks they should get something for free - imagine wanting to paid for value - scandalous!!!! Is you mechanic, free your doctor free, your lunch free??? YOU chose to buy, YOU chose to decide value, YOU chose to blame someone else for your decisons! SPARE ME Congratulations to Hugh Downs for making choices and accepting responsibility - I have not read anything here that says any info was FALSE just your assessment of value. Get real and grow up

  5. If I made or knew of a lifesaving medicine , I would NOT sell it. I would happily give it away. Having such knowledge is not like paying for a service of a mechanic or a doctor. The guy has a book to sell so why the sleazy infomercial? It's a hoax on sick people. From the posts of those who bought it, it's a scam. I think Hugh should wake up and realize what his appearance means to people - honesty and integrity. He's a lure!

  6. Seeing Hugh's honest face one sleepless night I felt he was on something. But, being what I am - a Doubting Thomas, I went on the search of Internet, checked out the Italian miracle doctor (I have cancer) and decided he should be hanged by his testicles by giving sick people false hopes.
    Shame on you, Hugh!

  7. I wasn't even trying to order this book and I still got it in the mail. I clicked on "Get more information", and of course I got the book instead. Is this legal? I certainly wasn't trying to buy the book, I just wanted to know more about it. I haven't opened it. My husband signed for it, but I don't think it should be our responsibility to pay to send it back when I hadn't ordered it in the first place. Should I complain to the Attorney General of my State? It's getting easier to get scammed all of the time.

  8. I think it's a shame that the 88 year old Hugh Downs doesn't realize he's "using his super powers for evil". It encourages people to stop taking "drugs" and instead go the "natural" route. I had a dear friend, 53 years old, who stopped taking blood pressure medicine, instead relying on alternative Chinese herbs. She had a stroke and died. I wonder if Hugh Downs has enough confidence in the untested medical theories in the book he's hawking to stop taking blood pressure medicine at the age of 88? I bet not.
