Results
of a study in Canada (“Hemorrhaging Faith”) show that young people are leaving
churches in significant numbers. The same thing is happening in America and
will happen in more extreme numbers in the future.

If this subject matter
is of interest to you, I urge you to take a look at this short
article on the Out of Ur blog.
Frankly, I don’t
believe in the solution the blog proposes… (“it
seems that church-based solutions to retaining young adults will not be enough.
We must have a more robust effort to engage whole households, and the best way
to retain future generations is to ensure their parents have a vibrant,
positive connection to Christ themselves”).
That sounds good
– “a vibrant, positive connection to Christ” – doesn’t it? Yet, I think the church
is missing the connection young people and middle aged people really want and
that is relevance! People slip away
from the church because they don’t see relevance anymore. What has this Christ
to do with the world as it is? People want, more than anything, to deal with
that question? Sadly, there is a solid and meaningful answer to that question,
but the church won’t wrestle with it.
There’s still
too much talk of salvation and reward points! To young people, that’s taking
and getting! The young are much more interested in giving, healing and sharing.
“Take away from
me the noise of your songs; to the melody of your harps I will not listen; but let justice roll down like waters and righteousness as a mighty stream!”
[Amos 5:23]
I really mean it!
